During his childhood, Vijay performed as a child actor in films produced by his father, S. A. Chandrasekhar. Vijay debuted as a lead actor in film Naalaya Theerpu in 1992 when he was 18 years old. The movie was produced by his father. Vijay co-starred with Vijayakanth in the film Sendhoorapandi which is his second film. After that he acted two low budget films namely Rasigan and Deva respectively. In 1993, he co-starred with actor Ajith Kumar in a movie Rajavin Parvaiyil. In the same year Vijay acted two more romantic comedy films namely Vishnu and Chandralekha. In the following year, Vijay continued to act in romantic comedy films like Coimbatore Mappillai. 

A film named Poove Unakkaga which was directed by Vikraman earned recognition to him which was one of his greatest hits. Vasantha Vasal was his tenth movie. After that also Vijay gave some more action movies such as Maanbumigu Maanavan and Selva. In 1997, Vijay acted two romantic movies like Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen and Love Today. After that acted with tamil legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan in the movie Once More. Next once more vijay acted with Surya in Nerukku Ner which was directed by Vasanth and produced by Maniratnam which was a debut movie for Surya. In the same year, Vijay got Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for the movie   Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, which was directed by Fazil.

In 1998, Vijay acted movies such us in Ninaithen Vandhai, Priyamudan, and Nilaave Vaa. In 1999, he got Special Prize for Thulladha Manamum Thullum in the following year's Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. This was followed by the films Endrendrum Kadhal, Nenjinile, Minsara Kanna.

At the start of the new millennium he decided not to commit in any movies which will take one year to release which gave a new trend to him. In the same year he did Kushi directed by S. J. Suryah and Priyamanavale. In 2001, he acted in Siddique’s comedy Movie Friends again co-starring with Suriya. In 2002, he acted with then debutante Priyanka Chopra in Thamizhan. Youth and Bagavathi rounded off the year. In the year 2003 he did Vaseegara and Pudhiya Geethai.

Vijay’s movie named Ghilli (remake of Telugu movie Okkadu) released in 2004 which was directed by S. Dharani became his one of the biggest commercial successes which ran 200 days in theatres. In 2005, he acted in other major films such as the Perarasu-directed Thirupaachi, romantic movie  Sachin, and another masala film, Sivakasi directed by Perarasu. In 2006, he acted in Aadhi and later Pokkiri directed by Prabhu Deva. Vijay got honorary doctorate from M.G.R University for his philanthropic works.

In the Late 2007 he got some set back in his career. He acted in a romantic drama film Azhagiya Thamizh Magan in which he appeared in dual roles first time in his career. In 2008, again he acted in director Dharani’s movie Kuruvi. In the year 2009, he acted the action masala film Villu directed by Prabhu Deva again after Pokkiri which was a second movie in dual role in his career. Followed by this Vijay acted Vettaikaaran, produced by AVM Productions and distributed by Sun Pictures. In 2010, Vijay acted his 50th film Sura, which was also distributed by Sun Pictures.

The year 2010 has become a comeback for him. He worked with director Siddique again for Kaavalan, the Tamil remake of the Malayalam film Bodyguard which received a positive response from both viewers and critics and was declared a successful venture at the box office. In 2011 he worked with M. Raja for Velayudham, which is being produced by Venu Ravichandran which hit theaters and running successfully.
