Sehwag was born in a Jat family from Haryana. The son of a grain merchant, Sehwag spent his childhood in a bungalow in a joint family, with siblings, uncles, aunts and sixteen cousins. Though now settled in New Delhi, Sehwag family hails from Haryana. Sehwag was the third of four children born to father Krishan and mother Krishna Sehwag, with two older sisters Manju and Anju, and younger brother Vinod. His father attributes his interest in cricket to a toy bat which he was given when he was seven months old. He attended Arora Vidya School in Delhi, and pestered his parents to let him play cricket, on the basis that he was not academically gifted.

Virendra  Sehwag is the Zen master of modern cricket, and also he is one of the leading batsmen in the Indian cricket team. Sehwag is an aggressive right-handed opening batsman and a part-time right-arm off-spin bowler. He played his first One Day International in 1999 and joined the Indian Test cricket team in 2001. In April 2009, Sehwag became the only Indian to be honoured as the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for his performance in 2008, subsequently becoming the first player of any nationality to retain the award for 2009.

Sehwag holds multiple records including the highest score made by an Indian in Test cricket (319), which was also the fastest triple century in the history of international cricket (reached 300 off only 278 balls). His other innings of 309 and 293 are also the second and third best by any Indian player. Sehwag also holds the distinction of being one of four batsmen in the world to have ever surpassed 300 twice in Test cricket, and the only one to score two triple centuries and take a five-wicket innings haul. In March 2009, Sehwag smashed the fastest century ever scored by an Indian in ODI cricket, from 60 balls. On 8 December 2011, he hits hismaiden double century in ODI cricket, against West Indies, becoming the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the landmark. His score remains the highest individual score in ODI cricket - 219 off 149 balls. He is the only player in world to score a double hundred in ODI and a triple hundred in Test Cricket.

Sehwag was appointed as Vice-Captain of the Indian team under
Rahul Dravid in October 2005 but due to poor form, he was later replaced by V. V. S. Laxman in December 2006 as Test vice-captain. In January 2007, Sehwag was dropped from the ODI team and later from the Test team as well. During his term as vice-captain, Sehwag skippered the team in place of injured Dravid in two ODIs and one Test. Following his return to form in 2008 and the retirement of Anil Kumble. By early 2009, Sehwag had reestablished himself as one of the best performing batsmen in ODI cricket.

Sehwag's technique is often cited as being particularly unorthodox, often backing away to free his arms whilst playing his shots, in particular to cut or drive spinners inside out. He is frequently cited by commentators for his extremely strong square cutting and upper cutting and power through the off-side. He is also an excellent player of the late cut. In particular, his tendency to strike the ball in the air and risk dismissal is a trait which has seen him noted for his chancy and adventurous mindset. He is also noted for a relative lack of footwork, with his timing often attributed to his eyesight. Of late, Sehwag has shown a proclivity to be dismissed by inswing deliveries, something attributed to his leaden-footed batting style. He has also got dismissed playing the cut shot when the ball was too close to his body to cut, especially in limited over matches.

 World record

Sehwag hammered 219 off 149 balls in the fourth one-day match against the West Indies in Indore on 7th dec 2011, joining compatriot Sachin Tendulkar as the only batsmen to score double-hundreds in the ODI matches.
The opener plundered 25 boundaries and seven sixes to surpass Tendulkar's unbeaten 200 against South Africa in Gwalior last year, before being dismissed in the 47th over.As Sehwag moved beyond 170, England batsman Kevin Pietersen tweeted his prediction that a world record was on the way and urged his followers to watch a genius bat.

Sehwag's World Cup winning teammate Yuvraj Singh compared the opener to batting great Sir Vivian Richards. He said that,"I never saw Sir Viv bat but I've seen Sehwag bat,", himself one of the most aggressive batsmen in world cricket. "What a player. 219 in a one-day game is next to impossible."

Sehwag, who is leading India in the current series in the absence of the rested Mahendra Singh Dhoni, had managed just 46 runs in the previous three matches. But he took advantage of a good batting track and short boundaries at the Holkar stadium to bludgeon his way to the double-century, which he said was a tougher achievement than his triple-hundreds in Tests.

The 33 years old Sehwag, a veteran of 240 one-dayers, attributed his feat to years of experience massing runs. He said that, "As one matures with age, one tries to achieve whatever one wants. I thrive on expectations. 'People were expecting a 200 from me and I am happy I lived up to their expectations."and also said "Obviously, I am very tired. I am an old man now and my back gets stiff. So I need to take an ice bath."

Sehwag was often compared to Sachin Tendulkar in his early days due to the similar batting style, build and appearance. He has acknowledged numerous times that he consciously attempted to model his playing style on Tendulkar's in his youth.washbuckling Indian batsman Virender Sehwag said the opportunity to score an ODI double hundred comes once in a lifetime and he never expected to get the epic knock, during the  course of which he also broke his role model Sachin Tendulkar's record.
Both double tons have come in the state of Madhya Pradesh. While Tendulkar got his in Gwalior, Sehwag has got his in Indore where Tendulkar completed 10,000 ODI runs in the game against Australia in 2001.Tendulkar scored 90 runs on the off side, 110 through the on side.  Meanwhile, Sehwag scored 99 runs on the off side, 120 through on the on side. In other words, both scored 60 per cent through the off side and the remaining 40 through leg.

Both struck all their sixes straight down the ground. There was nothing square of the wicket. Sachin three sixes came through long-off, long-on and deep mid-wicket. Sehwag's seven sixes came through mid-off, long-on and mid-wicket.Though both scored 25 boundaries each, Sehwag's fours came behind square, through the covers, besides the four boundaries straight down the ground. Tendulkar, on the other hand, struck fours all over the ground.
Tendulkar's knock began like a whirlwind. At the end of 10 overs, he was batting 46 off just 18 balls. But Sehwag went easy on 29 off 14 balls. Thereafter, the numbers became identical. At the end of 20 overs, Tendulkar was 79 unbeaten off 36. Sehwag was batting 78 off 35. At the end of 30 overs, Tendulkar was on 110 off 57. Sehwag was on 128 off 61 balls.
Both double hundreds helped India win the series. Tendulkar's knock at Gwalior helped India take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Similarly, Sehwag's knock at Indore has helped India win the five-match series with a 3-1 margin. Also, on both occasions, India batted first, and posted in excess of 400.
